Carlo Scarpa
Glass pear, model 4723
MVM Cappellin & C.
Italy, ca. 1928
Red opaque glass with green applied details and gold foil
5 1/2" h (14 cm)
In the mid to late twenties, glass fruit and vegetables started to become incredibly popular on Murano. You begin to see the proliferation of console bowls being displayed in the home with numerous examples mounded inside, replacing actual fruit and vegetables. While designing for MVM Cappellin & C., Carlo Scarpa penned his own models that were often executed in very intense colors and highlighted with ribbing, an iridescent surface finish, and gold foil. This example, as expected, is very light weight and hollow inside, as the original intention was for placement inside a delicate soffiato glass bowl.
Excellent condition. A couple very minor open areas where the stem is joined to the body, which occurred in the making.
