Ercole Barovier
Zebrati centerpiece

Barovier & Toso
Italy, 1949
Glass bowl internally decorated with a snipped and twisted rim
9 1/4", d 4” h (23.5, 10 cm)

Ercole Barovier, one of the most recognized names in twentieth century glass, was an esteemed designer with an imagination that never stopped. He led and designed for several furnaces but is probably most known for his leadership of Barovier & Toso. In 1936, Ercole Barovier liquidated Vetreria Artistica Barovier, joined forces with SAIAR Ferro Toso, and this movement resulted in the creation of Ferro Toso Barovier Vetreria Artistiche Reuinte S.A., or simply Ferro Toso Barovier as collectors refer to it. This was a very short-lived furnace, and a reorganization in the very late thirties would shift the name essentially to what we know today as Barovier & Toso.

The series seen here is called Zebrati and it was released in 1949. Pieces from this series are internally decorated with a spiral motif, in this case dark amethyst, atop which gold leaf was applied in an abundant fashion and deep ribbing was added via the use of a mold. In this example, the top rim was then snipped and twisted, providing for a very sculptural appearance. In my opinion, this is a very strong example from the Zebrati series, and it is also a model that is seldom seen. As expected from Barovier & Toso, the materials used and execution are all top notch.

Excellent condition.
