Vetreria Artistica Barovier
Soffiato vase with applied details
Italy, ca. 1920
Yellow glass vase with applied blue bands and gold foil
7 5/8" h (19.5 cm)
The Barovier family was always at the forefront of design and innovation. This vase represents the short transitional period between the traditional Murano glassblowing aesthetic, vecchia Murano, and the modernist movement that hit in the early twenties. The design of this vase is stripped down of superfluous details that were connected with Murano glassblowing prior to about 1920. This model simply has two applied horizontal bands and an applied rim, all in a lovely contrasting dark blue color. The body is colored with yellow powders (polveri) and this coloration technique was popular prior to the modernist period. Therefore, this vase is part of that seldom seen middle period, hovering between the two ends of the design spectrum.
Excellent condition.
