The two decades following the Second World War were the high watermark of Murano glass production in the twentieth century. The period was rich with innovation, and the public was eager to decorate their new homes in the Midcentury Modern aesthetic. Few Artistic Directors had an impact on glass production like Flavio Poli—everything he penned was gold. While the sommerso glass technique was not devised by Flavio Poli, his designs featuring the even layering of colors made it famous, and execution of the technique was unparalleled care of the superior talents of the glassblowers of Seguso Vetri d’Arte. It was the perfect marriage. Many would emulate his work, but no one came close in end result. Among the most desired forms utilizing this technique are his teardrops which are wonderfully sinuous and organic. This vase is truly an iconic example of Poli’s design aesthetic and the particular color combination seen here is stellar.

It is believed to be a larger variant of model 12875 (see reference below). Per the Cini Archive, this particular model drawing states a height of 20 centimeters, but this vase stands at a very proud 30 centimeters. The book example referenced above stands at 24 centimeters, so you can see there were some slight deviations from the notations on the original drawing. This was a common practice, and a retail client could have made this special request.

Excellent condition. There are some tiny bubbles within the glass, which are common to the sommerso technique. This is a supremely fine example. The base shows a remnant of a label, probably from a retailer.
