Salviati Dott. Antonio
Vase with applied detail
Italy, ca. 1880
Aventurine glass with applied collar
7 1/4" h (18.5 cm)
Dr. Antonio Salviati employed the finest glassblowers on Murano, and when he transitioned to a retailer in 1878 he contracted with makers, most notably Vetreria Fratelli Barovier of whom the blowers he used to employ, to purchase the cream of the crop examples. Aventurine glass in its coppery brilliance is incredibly difficult to work with, making articles blown entirely from it very rare. In addition to the Aventurine body, this vase includes a small applied collar in clear glass. As typical with Aventurine glass, due to its chemical properties, there are swirls of red in a few areas. This is to be expected.
Excellent condition.
Reference: The Colors of Murano in the XIX Century, Bova, Junck, and Migliaccio, p. 111 shows comparable example.
