Dr. Antonio Salviati had an insatiable desire to explore and expand the field of blown glass on Murano during the second half of the 19th century. He contributed immensely to the field of glassblowing by encouraging and challenging the glassblowers under his employ to create new decor types and to simply produce the best glass possible. Antonio Salviati's connections in England helped convince the public that Salviati glass was top notch and a worthwhile investment. During this period, numerous pieces also ended up at London's Victoria & Albert Museum, making that institution a mecca for Salviati glass collectors today.
Continually, during this period, Salviati employed numerous members of the Barovier family who, in their own right, deserve an immense amount of credit for their technical abilities and contributions to the field. These members of the Barovier family left Salviati dott. Antonio in 1890 after Salviati himself passed away. The former would open their own furnace and operate under the name Fratelli Barovier. After the Barovier family exited the Salviati furnace, the latter was left without a single glassblower. From then on, the Salviati company was strictly a retailer and was managed by Maurizio Camerino who, through contracted agreements with outside glassblowers, particularly Fratelli Barovier, was afforded the right to purchase "the best" in glass production for sale in the Salviati retail shops. In addition to retailing other's designs, in-house designs were produced by various furnaces over this period. Actual in-house glass production would not resume again until the mid-twentieth century.
