Vittorio Zecchin
Soffiato fruit bowl model 3022
VSM Cappellin Venini & C.
Italy, ca. 1924
Pagliesco colored glass bowl with soft ribbing
15 1/8" d, 5 1/2" h (38.5, 14 cm)
The fresh, modern look of the designs by Vittorio Zecchin for VSM Cappellin Venini & C. brought worldwide attention, once again, to Murano and its glassblowers. While Zecchin did not "invent" soffiato glass, he made it wildly popular with his simplified and stripped down designs void of the superfluous. This large centerpiece was executed in pagliesco glass and features very soft ribbing, a hallmark of Zecchin's designs from 1924 and early 1925, prior to the split of Giacomo Cappellin and Paolo Venini. A very rare model which was perfectly executed in-line with factory drawings, unlike the actual example shown on page 365 of the book Vittorio Zecchin: Transparent Glass for Cappellin and Venini by Barovier and Sonego that has subpar proportions. It is unsigned as expected, because VSM Cappellin Venini & C. did not use an acid stamp or have any sort of signature.
Excellent condition. Very light scratches to the interior only viewable under close inspection and in just the right angle of light.
Reference: Vittorio Zecchin: Transparent Glass for Cappellin and Venini, Barovier and Sonego, p. 365 shows a factory drawing of this model.
